Copilot + PCs with Always-Available AI Assistant 💻
Microsoft held a special event yesterday to unveil its new Windows PCs designed for AI, the Copilot+ PCs. These are equipped with powerful neural processing unit (NPU) - a specialized computer chip for AI-intensive processes like real-time translations and image generation - that can perform more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).
Bring AI to daily life is the integration of Copilot, your personal AI agent, which is now powered by GPT-4o. Imagine finding anything you’ve ever seen on your computer in seconds, generating images with just a few words, and even translating audio from over 40 languages into English in real-time.
Key Highlights:
Recall: It is a photographic memory for your computer. Every few seconds, Copilot+ PC captures snapshots of your screen, saving them to your hard drive. You can then search through these screenshots and instantly find any content you’ve seen, whether it's a document, website, email, or chat message. You can even scroll through a timeline of your snapshots to find what you’re looking for.
Cocreator: This AI image creation tool lets you combine text prompts with your own drawings to generate new images in real-time. Refine, edit, and evolve your ideas effortlessly as you work.
Restyle Image: Take your personal photos to the next level by reimagining them with new styles. Transform your photos into cyberpunk, claymation, or any other style you can imagine.
Live Captions: Break down language barriers with live translations of audio into English. This feature is perfect for watching international movies, listening to podcasts, or collaborating with colleagues around the world.
Adobe in Copilot+ PCs: Microsoft is partnering with Adobe to bring powerful AI features to Copilot+ PCs. Adobe’s flagship apps, including Photoshop, Lightroom, and Express, now leverage the power of the NPU for faster and more efficient performance.
OpenAI’s “Her” was Without Permission 🎙️
OpenAI is in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. First, it was for ignoring AI safety and now it is for cloning an actor’s voice for its Voice Mode. Scarlett Johansson has accused the company of using a voice in ChatGPT that sounded eerily similar to hers without her permission. Johansson claimed that OpenAI’s “Sky” voice mimicked her distinctive tones despite her having turned down their initial offer to voice the system. Here’s everything that has happened:
In September 2023, Sam Altman reached Johansson to hire her to voice the current Voice Mode in ChatGPT. He said that Johansson’s voice would be comforting to people. But she declined the offer for personal reasons.
Last week when OpenAI showcased its new Voice Assistant, social media platforms were buzzing about how closely its voice and style resembled with that of Johansson.
Johansson said she was “shocked, angered, and in disbelief” when she heard the demo. She claimed that Altman had even insinuated the similarity was intentional by tweeting the word “her” after the demo, referencing the movie "Her" in which Johansson voiced a virtual assistant.
OpenAI has released a blog saying that the “Sky” voice was not an imitation of Johansson’s but was from a different professional actress using her natural voice. They did not intend to mimic her voice.
For now, OpenAI is pausing the rollout of “Sky” and the new Voice Assistant will soon be available to all Plus users without Sky.
Tesla’s Future Hinges on Elon Musk’s Demand 🔮
Elon Musk has issued a clear demand to Tesla shareholders: grant him 25% control of the company, or he will halt the development of AI and robotics products. Elon Musk and Tesla’s board are at odds over the company’s future in AI and robotics. Musk says these technologies are key to Tesla’s success, the company would be “worthless” without self-driving capabilities.
Musk is demanding a larger stake in Tesla, including a 25% voting share, and the company’s relocation to Texas. He’s also tied these demands to the approval of his 2018 compensation package. If the board doesn’t agree to these terms, Musk may take his AI and robotics ventures elsewhere, leaving Tesla without its most promising technologies.
